Business records, 1847-1848, 1861, 1870-1898.

The collection includes three account books, covering the period 1847 to 1898. The first volume contains accounts for Howe and Sessions, for the period 1847 to 1848. The volume records customers, building materials, and miscellaneous other expenses. Also included are accounts, dated 1861, for coffins and undertaking supplies. The second volume contains accounts for George Sessions and Sons, covering the period 1870 to 1875. The volume records funeral charges, including the names of customers and floral and hack costs. Accounts for a new building in 1871 are also contained in this volume. The third volume, also for George Sessions and Sons, contains records of removals from the Mechanic Street Cemetery and Pine Meadow Cemetery from 1876 to 1898. The name, date of death, ages at death, reinterment locations and remarks concerning the condition of the grave markers are included. A record of the reinterment of the tomb of Isaiah Thomas (1749-1831) is found in this volume.

George Sessions (1814-1901), of Worcester, Mass., was first involved in the firm of Howe and Sessions, manufacturers of tools for shoemakers. In 1850, he was appointed city undertaker and sexton and engaged in the undertaking business.
